Ever since we have had our dogs, many mysteries have crossed our path. The few obvious ones are the cable going out because "someone" has chewed through the line (still no one has admitted to that), a few missing tennis shoes (but pieces were found in the back yard (no witnesses to this crime either), but within the last few months there were two crime scenes that we encountered and I am proud to say that my husband has put my mind at ease because of his Crime Scene Investigating skills. Of course I make fun of him for watching all of the "Dateline's," "60 minutes," etc. but they really do teach you a lot. Our first mystery happened a few months ago when I was pulling up to the house and Petey is running around the house...so I begin to panic because they have gotten out before and we luckily found Texas 20 miles away from our house...well I run to the back yard to see if Tex is still back there, and he is. Then I run to the gate to see if it is opened, and it isn't. Now my dogs can jump, but there is no way that Petey cleared our fence, so for the entire day we thought someone had jumped our fence and tried to steal our dogs...well come to find out Mitchell forgot to latch the gate the night before and Petey was skinny enough to get through...Tex on the other hand does not watch his diet and could not fit through the gate.
Now our last mystery is a little spooky at first, but again I am proud to say that I believe I am married to a very smart man. Well, two nights ago, after Michael's all star game we came home and needed to give our dogs a bath because they were out in our "swamp land of a backyard" all day long. So, Mitch goes to pull open our gate and if you were to just watch him you could see the terror on his face. He demands that I come over and check out what he is looking at because his mind is running so fast at the moment. He opens the gate and my mouth drops...what do we see? Well, one of our three dog houses is pushed up against our gate. Why is this so amazing? See our dog houses are placed on the other side of our house about 50 feet away from our gate. So again, we fear that someone within the last week or so was in our back yard and couldn't get out because we lock our gate from the outside...so our "perp" pushed the doghouse to the gate to jump our fence. Both of us feel icky about the whole thing, so after Mitch bathes our muddy dogs he goes to investigate. After 15 minutes of walking around the house with no shirt on, mosquitoes attacking him, and a flashlight in hand...he figures out what happened. First off, we have decided that there is no way to enter our backyard from the outside because the pretty side is facing out on the whole perimeter...Second...he checked each railing to see if there were any mud prints and there weren't any, not even on the dog house...Third...his were the only footprints...then it dawned on him...we actually do have a swampland in our backyard and during one of the monsoons that Abilene has seen for the past week literally flooded our back yard (it's disgusting) and our dog house was picked up by rising waters and floated on down the path to the gate and was halted by the gate. I think it is quite hilarious, but he figured it out! Forget CSI Miami...it's all about the Doty household.
